Seven Men Appear In Court After Smuggling 1 400 Bales Of Second-Hand Clothes And Shoes

Seven Mutare men reportedly smuggled 1 400 bales of second-hand clothes and shoes worth millions of Zimbabwe dollars.

The Manica Post reports that Obey Manuel aged 22, Learnmore Muchenje (44), Wilson Kamba (29), Caleb Chihwa (31), and Tinashe Mugomba appeared before Mutare magistrate Langton Mukwengi.

The suspects were each granted $50 000 bail and are expected back in court on the 11th of next month.

Meanwhile, Stanley Tigere aged 39, and Philip Mandangu (41) who allegedly offered police officers a US$9 000 bribe to release impounded trucks with the smuggled goods, also appeared in court charged with bribery.

Recently, the Zimbabwe Republic Police indicated that it was pulling up its socks in its fight against smuggling syndicates.

Six suspects were recently nabbed in Mutare for smuggling. A contraband of second-hand clothes and shoes laden on six trucks believed to have been destined for Harare was recovered.

Four suspects were first intercepted and arrested but two men appeared and offered the officers a bribe of US$9 000, which the officers turned down and immediately arrested them.

The first four suspects, in this case, were arrested after a high-speed chase. Police officers ended up shooting the tyres of the fleeing suspects’ vehicles for them to stop.

Seven more smugglers, six of them foreigners, were also arrested in Binga as they loaded 275 clothing bales onto a 15-tonne DAF truck.

The university confirmed that Khanyile Sithole was rushed to the United Bulawayo Hospitals after she collapsed following the blast in a lecture room on Monday.
