A septuagenarian woman from Gutu has been thrown behind bars after she allegedly killed her 19-year-old granddaughter for spending a night out away from home.

The elderly grandmother who is aged 78 is from Serima Village under Chief Serima. She was arrested for killing her granddaughter last Monday after a disagreement over staying out turned fatal.

The incident was confirmed by Zimbabwe Republic Police national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi who expressed concern over the increase in murder cases.

Assistant Commissioner Nyathi told the state-owned Herald,

“Police is urging members of the public to resolve their disputes without the use of violence.”

“On July 5, 2021, a Gutu woman aged 78 was arrested by police in connection with the murder of a girl aged 19 at Serima Village, Chief Serima.

“The victim was assaulted with a stick and fell headlong on a steel bed over allegations of sleeping outside the homestead the previous night.”

The elderly woman is expected to appear in court soon.

The police spokesperson also said that the police had arrested a Kwekwe man for killing his landlady’s brother.

The suspect who was a tenant is alleged to have been in bad books with his landlady. Due to the strained relationship between the two, the landlady enlisted the help of her brother in order to evict the suspect.

When the landlady’s brother tried to evict the suspect from his sister’s house, the tenant responded violently. He produced a knife which he used to stab the brother.

The tenant was arrested and is expected to appear in court soon.
