A notorious armed robber who was recently shot dead by the police during a shootout has been described as the “darling of Mabvuku.”

Benjamin Craig Musasa succumbed to gunshot wounds at Parirenyatwa Hospital a few hours after he was involved in a shootout with detectives who wanted to apprehend him.

Despite his fearsome reputation and criminal activities, he was well regarded by the community in Mabvuku. According to locals, Musasa had respect for his community and never conducted any criminal activities there.

Apart from not conducting any “business” in Mabvuku, Musasa also used to spoil his community and to buy groceries and goodies for those in need.

One Mabvuku resident told the Sunday Mail,

“Musasa was known for his generosity as he often spoiled community members of all age groups with booze, weekend braais and other goodies.

“He never conducted his business in Mabvuku, but one day he made a bet with someone saying he can rob Shell Garage (Mabvuku) despite its tight security.”

“The following week he robbed it with his guys, and even removed his mask and lifted the middle finger towards security cameras.”

Despite his criminal activities in Zimbabwe and South Africa, Musasa managed to evade the authorities in both countries for years.

According to some locals, Musasa was protected by his relatives who used to conduct some rituals every year to ensure that he would not get arrested.

However, his luck finally ran out after he was cornered in a maize field at the corner of Latima Road and Harare Drive after being lured there by law enforcement officials.

Musasa and another armed robber Decide Rice tried to fight their way out. In the process, Musasa was shot while Rice managed to escape. Musasa died on admission at the hospital.

He was buried earlier this week.
