Former First Lady, Lordina Mahama together with other former first and second ladies are not obliged under any law to refund monies they received from the State as allowances till date while their husbands were in office as President and Vice president.
“Nobody can put a gun on her head to refund any allowance Lordina Mahama received legally and there is nothing wrong with it”, political Science Lecturer with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Amakye Boateng pointed out.
He was commenting on the GH¢899,097.84 refunded by the First Lady of the Republic, Rebecca Akufo-Addo to the State following public uproar over her allowance and other emoluments.
Dr. Amakye Boateng told the host of the Kumasi-based Akoma FM morning show, Aduanaba Kofi Asante Ennin monitored by MyNewsGh.com that, Mrs. Lordina Mahama has every right to take her allowances from the state despite pressure by a section of Ghanaians to refund what she has been paid.
“In the case of Rebecca Akufo-Addo, nobody put a gun on her head to refund the money. She did that voluntarily so you can’t force Lordina Mahama too to follow suit”, Dr. Amakye Boateng stated.
Mrs. Akufo-Addo, wife of President Akufo-Addo had indicated that her decision to refuse the offer is a personal one “without prejudice to the rights of others and does not undermine the propriety of the process undertaken by Parliament.
