Increased Murder Cases By Mentally Challenged People Call For Urgent Gvt Intervention As Man Stones 2-Year-old Girl To Death

Recently there has been an increased number of murder cases in the country involving the mentally challenged and this is now calling for urgent Government intervention.

Experts have attributed the problem to a critical shortage of mental illness drugs in the country Masvingo Mirror reports. It is also reported that the drugs are also expensive and not affordable to the majority of citizens.

On Wednesday last week, Roy Nigo of Mubonderi Village under Chief Chitsa in Gutu was arrested after he whipped his relatives’ two-year-old daughter and then hit her with a stone. The girl died three days later on Saturday at Harare Hospital.

Nigo killed the girl two days after his release from Chikurubi Maximum Prison.

At 4 pm the deceased’s mother Sophia Mhokore, 49, left the girl and the accused at home as she went to the fields.
Nigo allegedly started assaulting the deceased with bare hands for no apparent reason. He then struck her with a stone once on the head.

The deceased was rushed to Chinyika Clinic then Masvingo Provincial Hospital and Harare Hospital where she died on arrival.

Masvingo Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the incident to the publication and said that the accused is mentally challenged.

He also said ZRP appeals to those who have relatives suffering from mental challenges to refer them to hospitals and to ensure that they take medications as prescribed.

Recently, iHarare reported that a councillor from the Zibagwe Rural District Council died together with his wife after they were attacked with a log by their mentally challenged grandson.

Ward 8 Councillor, Ambrose Ncube, 74, died on the spot after the attack by Victor Sibanda, 24.

His wife, Thandi Khumalo, 68, also died after she was assaulted as she tried to intervene.
