I Miss NDC In Power – Gabby

A leading member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has in a sarcastic Facebook post stated that he misses the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in power.

His post follows an ongoing social media campaign dubbed #Fixthecountry to draw the Akufo-Addo-led government’s attention to “the untold hardships in the country” and increment in petroleum and telecom call and data charges.

The conveners of the viral #FixTheCountry campaign on social media have served notice of a public protest slated for 9 May 2021.

In his characteristic satiric posts on social media, Otchere-Darko said: “I don’t know about you, but I miss the NDC in power.”

He added: “Those times when every year petrol prices went up by a quarter. When electricity and water prices also did their best to compete – on top of school fees. They knew how to fix prices. Things are tough, here, there, everywhere around the globe. But, they will get better. Keep faith. Don’t tempt fate!”

The protest

“We write with reference to Section 1 of the Public Order Act (Act 491), which provides that any person who desires to hold any special event within the meaning of that Act in any public place shall notify the police of his intention not less than five days before the date of the special event,” the notice to the police said.

The organisers promised to take into consideration all COVID-19 protocols, adding they do not intend to present a petition to the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

According to them, they settled on 9 May for the protest because the day captures the restless spirit of over 126 Ghanaians who lost their lives in the 9 May 2001 Accra Sports Stadium Disaster due “to institutionalised incompetence and disregard for Ghanaian lives.”

Also, they said the day commemorates the 26th anniversary of the Kume Preko demonstration of 11 May 1995.
