The infamous ghost thief,  Norman Chagwiza, who made waves after it emerged that he robbed people whilst clad in a white and black costume that made him appear like a ghost has been sentenced.

According to The Herald, Chagwiza was last week jailed by Gutu Magistrate Madhlenkosi Ndlovu on his own plea of guilty.

Magistrate Ndlovu initially sentenced him for four years before suspending 12 months on the condition of good behaviour.

Allegations are that on May 13 this year, Chagwiza dressed in his ghost apparel went to Elizabeth Chipika’s homestead at around 1 am.

Upon arrival, Chagwiza, who was armed with a machete threatened Chipika and cowed her before robbing her of a wallet containing an undisclosed amount of money.

Again, on Africa Day, Chagwiza went to Thomas Chivhura’s homestead at night and used a ladder to ascent to the roof of the latter’s bedroom house.

He was dressed in the same ghost costume and tried to remove a solar panel that was there.

Luck ran out for Chagwiza after Chivhura heard some movements on his roof and came out to investigate.

Realizing that he had been discovered, Chagwiza disembarked from the roof and fled. Chivhura teamed up with neighbours and gave chase.

They apprehended him and upon further investigations established that he used the “ghost” suit to instil fear in his victims.

Meanwhile, Chagwiza’s younger brother, Musiiwa Gondoro committed suicide some days after going into hiding in the mountains upon learning that his sibling had been apprehended.

It is suspected that Gondoro was involved in his brother’s shenanigans and feared being arrested for multiple counts of housebreaking and robbery.

After three days of hiding in the mountains, Gondoro committed suicide by hanging himself. His body was recovered by the authorities on Tuesday morning. Before his death, Gondoro is reported to have instructed his wife not to reveal how they acquired some of their household property.
