Founder and Leader of United Progressive Party (UPP) Mr. Akwasi Addai Odike says the country’s flagship program Free Senior High School education (Free SHS) is on the verge of collapsing because the President has refused to accept his advice.
According to Odike, the President should not have started the Free SHS policy at the first place after he made statements to the effect that the country has no money.
“When he (President Akufo – Addo) went to Eastern Region to announce the implementation of the Free SHS in September 2017, I went to him, by then he had come to Kumasi and told him, Nana, do not start now, let us do wider consultation. Because what you see is different from what some of us see”, Mr. Odike revealed this on Hello Fm in Kumasi monitored by MyNewsGH.com.
“If you say there is no money, then how can we give something free when we don’t have it?” He quizzed.
According to Odike who described the policy as a “pro – poor intervention”, he suggested to the President to provide free education to the poor alone and allow those who can afford to pay.
Explaining further, the businessman noted that to make Free SHS better, government must provide form at the various district assemblies for the poor students to go there and pick them voluntarily. After filling the form then government picks biometric information of such individuals so that when they begin to work, they can pay back for another “poor student” to also benefit.
This in his view makes it a revolving fund.
He also suggested for the establishment of an Educational Bank to take care of all educational matters.
Taking on the NPP government led by President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo – Addo, Odike fumed saying, “today they didn’t get any good results, free Education is at the verge of collapse and parents are paying more than what they were paying previously when there was no free education”.
