Final Year Students of the Kumasi Girls Senior High School(SHS) have allegedly been brutalized by a combined team of Police and Military personnel after they were said to have embarked on a demonstration in protest against authorities preventing them from going home for mid-semester break
The Ghana Education Service(GES) had earlier issued a statement directing all heads of SHSs and Technical schools to allow their Form three students to go on a mid-term break from July 20 to Sunday, July 25, 2021.
But the Service later rescinded its decision and directed all heads of Senior High and Technical schools across the Country to keep students in schools during the mid-term break due to the rising numbers of COVID-19.
This directive from the Ghana Education Service did not sit down well with the students who were agitated after their Headmistress relayed the latest development to them.
Pure Fm’s Osei Kwadwo who visited the campus reports that some of the students sustained injuries after they were brutalized.
The students in an interview said “We had information that we can home on Tuesday 20, 2021 so we all prepared and called our parents that we will be coming home. Yesterday the headmistress of our school called us that she won’t allow us to go home because GES has rescinded their decision. We were confused because our parents were also expecting us”. the students said
“We insisted that we want to go home and few minutes we saw military and police officers coming to the school. They started brutalizing us” the students revealed.
The assembly member for Abrepo Kesse electoral area who is a board member for Kumasi Girls SHS Daniel Acheampong in an interview with Kumasi based Nhyira Fm Morning Show hosted by Nana Kwadwo Juantuah denied the allegation of the students that military men were deployed to the school to brutalize them.
According to Mr Daniel Acheampong, “the students embarked on a demonstration after they were told by their headmistress that they won’t be allowed to go home. The school authorities called the police to come and protect properties in the school and I only 4 police officers but they never brutalize any students”.
“The students started throwing stones when they saw the police but later they were forced to go their dormitories without brutalizing any students,” he added.
