Ashanti Region records 367 deaths in seven months

The Ashanti Region alone has so far recorded 367 death resulting from road accidents in seven months in the year 2021, the Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has revealed.

“The region has so far recorded 367 deaths out of which 66 are females while 291 are males with 2,224 injuries”, Superintendent Emmanuel Aduboahen, Ashanti Regional Commander of MTTD revealed in an interview with Kumasi-based radio Pure FM monitored by

He further explained that, From January to July, 2,135 cases were recorded, 1,589 involved commercial vehicles and 1,284 were private. Motorbikes and tricycles were 697.

Speaking on the causes of these accidents and the difficulty the MTTD is facing in doing their job, Superintendent Emmanuel Aduboahen noted that issues of familiarities and lack of digitization in their systems are hindering their work.

“There is what we call institutional coordination; a police officer can make an arrest and seize a driver’s license, the driver will then go to another station for an extract that he has misplaced his license meanwhile it is not missing. Instead of the driver facing the law, he will rather find his way out of the hook. In case the driver goes to DVLA for a new license, because DVLA does not have any mechanism to check whether his license has been seized, they will then replace it for him”, he told Kwame Adinkra the host of the show Pure Morning Drive.

Superintendent Emmanuel Aduboahen, however, accepted the fact that the police service of course has challenges and assured that they are going to do self-assessment to improve on their jobs.
