According to the state-owned daily publication the Chronicle, 28-year-old Alex Ncube was arrested by alert police detectives after they observed that he was moving around with a concealed weapon in his waistband. The alert police officers challenged Ncube to show his permit for a concealed weapon, which he failed to do.

Following his arrest and interrogation on Friday, Ncube led the police to his partner in crime, 28-year-old Emmanuel Sibanda.

The arrest was confirmed by Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube. He told the publication,

“We have arrested two suspected armed robbers linked to a robbery which occurred in Maphisa on June 14. The suspects, both aged 28 from Gwanda are said to have raided Nanet Mine in Maphisa where they shot a man on the thigh and got away with US$1400. Their victim is hospitalised at UBH. This is one of the many armed robberies that are occurring in our country. Therefore, the CID detectives have cleared one of the cases.”

Inspector Ncube also revealed that upon further interrogation, the two suspects revealed that they had smuggled the pistol they used in the robberies after procuring it in South Africa.

“They claimed they bought the firearm from outside Zimbabwe for R3000. They have been charged with armed robbery and attempted murder. The accused person will appear in court soon.”

The arrest comes at a time when Bulawayo and parts of Matabeleland have seen a surge in armed robberies and violent crimes in the past few months. ZRP boss, Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga has since directed all provincial commanders to deploy police special units to deal with the scourge of armed robberies.
