Member of Parliament for Assin Central Kennedy Agyapong is set to face the Privileges Committee once again after an application by Alhassan Suhuyini, MP for Tamale North, by way of motion, complaining of comments allegedly made by the Assin Central MP, who is also the Chairman of Defence and Interior Committee of the House.
Mr. Suhuyini wrote that the Rt Hon Speaker just accepted his request to exercise his discretion under Order 27 of the House Standing Orders and refer the Hon Kennedy Ohene Agyapong to the Privileges Committee of Parliament, for conduct that continuously bring the name of Parliament into disrepute and an affront to the dignity of the House.
Explaining his rationale, Suhuyini said he “deems it necessary because of his (Agyemang’s) latest threat on the life of Joyfm Journalist, Erastus Asare Donkor, on his Net 2 TV program “The Attitude… It will be recalled that he issued similar threats on the same Network to the late Ahmed Suale before the Journalist was gunned down in cold blood by unknown assailants.
I thank Mr Speaker for indulging me and I hope and pray the members of the committee will put the interest of the nation above partisan considerations.” He wrote.
Speaking in Parliament however, Mr Suhuyini observed that Mr Agyapong had said on his own network, Net2 TV, that if he had been the President of Ghana, he would have would beaten Erastus Asare Donkor, a journalist of the multimedia group, who was based at Kumasi.
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin therefore directed the Privileges Committee of Parliament to look into motion of contempt against Mr Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, MP for Assin Central, for allegedly threatening a journalist, and report back to the House.
Quoting sections of the Standing Orders of Parliament, Mr Suhuyini prayed the Speaker to refer the Assin Central MP to Privileges Committee, “whose acts and conduct continued to affront the dignity of Parliament and brought it into disrepute”.
